COUNSELLING
Counselling and Psychotherapy
Both are forms of talking therapy that explore what is troubling you in a safe and supportive environment with someone who is trained to listen and respond appropriately. Counselling tends to focus on short-term issues and outcomes, while psychotherapy focuses on developing awareness and insights over a longer period. I’m a trained Counsellor but work psychotherapeutically, where appropriate, to help you get the most out of our sessions together.
What To Expect from Therapy With Me
I provide a compassionate, friendly, and professional space for you to explore your thoughts and emotions. We start by exploring what brought you to therapy and what you hope to gain. This helps us define goals or a direction for our work together. As an integrative practitioner, I then draw on a range of therapeutic theories and approaches to seek the best way forward and help you meet those goals.
How This Works in Practice
We may explore past patterns or relationships to understand and change what is happening in the present. We may also consider what personal growth is possible by working on any given challenge. You may want to tackle something specific—anxiety, panic attacks, or a relationship issue for example. There is also the option to attend sessions without a specific problem in mind, but simply with a desire to understand yourself better or find greater meaning in your life.
Along the way, I may offer worksheets and exercises, or suggest tools and techniques to try between sessions to deepen your therapeutic journey. We will check in periodically to ensure we are moving forward in the best way. Once one of us feels the time is right, we’ll work together to bring our sessions to a close.
Bereavement and Grief
Although I offer counselling for a range of issues, my specialisation is helping people that struggle with grief.
In addition to my core training in Integrative Counselling, I’ve completed specialist training with teachers and institutions including Cruse, Sir Colin Murray Parkes and Dr Lyn Prashant. My training spans a variety of topics, such as Complicated Grief, Traumatic Bereavement and Degriefing.
I continue to deepen my learning through ongoing professional development and find inspiration in the work of bereavement and grief experts such as Julia Samuel, David Kessler, Dr Kim Bateman and Dr William Worden.
My clients are some of my greatest teachers in showing me the potential for growth, development, and perspective shifts following a bereavement. I foster this development by helping clients find greater meaning and purpose following a loss.
